Cycling The Ring of the Reeks

where adventure meets serenity

gap Ring of the Reeks

The Ring of the Reeks is a spectacular cycling route around the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, offering some of the best mountain and valley scenery in Ireland. It’s a challenging loop that passes through iconic locations such as Moll’s Gap, the Black Valley, and the Gap of Dunloe, returning to Killarney.
Here’s what you need to know:

Route Overview:

  • Distance: Approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles).
  • Duration: 2 to 4 hours, depending on your pace and stops.
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (due to the elevation and length).
  • Terrain: Mix of country roads, steep climbs, and descents.
  • Start/End Point: Killarney town.

Route Highlights:

Killarney to Moll’s Gap:

  • The ride begins with a gradual climb out of Killarney, following the N71 road toward Moll’s Gap. This section offers spectacular views of Killarney National Park, including the lakes and forests.
  • Moll’s Gap is a high mountain pass, known for its panoramic views of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Black Valley. It’s named after Moll Kissane, who ran a popular shebeen (informal bar) in the 19th century.
  • There is a café at Moll’s Gap, making it a good spot for a break and to take in the scenery.

Black Valley:

  • From Moll’s Gap, you descend into the remote and peaceful Black Valley, one of the most isolated valleys in Ireland. This area was one of the last in Ireland to be connected to electricity in the 1970s, a testament to its remoteness.
  • The Black Valley is surrounded by towering peaks, lush greenery, and rivers, creating a tranquil atmosphere as you cycle through this serene landscape.

Gap of Dunloe:

  • After the Black Valley, you’ll climb up to the famous Gap of Dunloe, a narrow mountain pass that winds between Purple Mountain and Tomies Mountain. The Gap is known for its rugged beauty, steep ascents, and picturesque lakes.
  • This section is a highlight for many cyclists due to the dramatic landscape. You’ll likely encounter jaunting cars (horse-drawn carriages) and walkers, so be cautious as the road is narrow in places.
  • After reaching the highest point in the Gap, you’ll enjoy a thrilling descent back toward Kate Kearney’s Cottage, a great spot for a break or refreshment.

Return to Killarney:

  • From Kate Kearney’s Cottage, it’s a relatively flat ride back to Killarney, passing through rural roads with views of Lough Leane and the mountains.

Historical Significance:

  • Gap of Dunloe: The Gap has been a popular route for centuries, used by traders, farmers, and travelers. It’s steeped in history and local legends, including stories of the O’Sullivan Beare clan, who once controlled much of the land in this region.
  • Moll’s Gap: As mentioned earlier, it’s named after Moll Kissane, a woman who ran an illegal drinking establishment during the 1800s. The area was historically a key route for traders and herdsmen.
  • Black Valley: Due to its remoteness, the Black Valley has a unique place in Irish history. The area was largely untouched by modern conveniences until the mid-20th century, preserving its rural traditions.

Tips for Cycling the Ring of the Reeks:

Fitness Level:

This route is suitable for cyclists with a good level of fitness, as the climbs can be steep, especially at Moll’s Gap and the Gap of Dunloe. However, the stunning scenery is worth the effort.

Weather:

The weather in Kerry can be unpredictable, so prepare for all conditions. Bring waterproof clothing and layers, as the higher elevations can be cooler and wetter than Killarney.

Bike Choice:

A road bike or hybrid bike with good gearing is recommended due to the climbs. Make sure your bike is well-maintained and equipped for a long ride, with good brakes for the descents.

Water and Snacks:

Bring plenty of water and snacks, especially for the sections in the Black Valley and Gap of Dunloe, where facilities are limited. There are a few spots like Kate Kearney’s Cottage and the Moll’s Gap Café, but it’s best to be prepared.

Traffic and Safety:

The roads are narrow in places, especially in the Gap of Dunloe. Be mindful of jaunting cars, other cyclists, and walkers. It’s best to start early to avoid crowds, particularly in peak tourist season.

Timing:

Plan your route so you can enjoy the scenery at a leisurely pace. The loop can be done in about 5-6 hours with breaks, but it’s worth taking your time to soak in the incredible views.

Why Cycle the Ring of the Reeks?

This route offers some of the most diverse and dramatic landscapes in Ireland. You’ll experience sweeping mountain views, quiet valleys, and historic sites, all while cycling through one of the most beautiful parts of County Kerry. It’s challenging but rewarding, making it a must-do for any cyclist visiting Killarney.
